Super 8

John Pavlich and I open up J J Abrams’ mystery box and like what we see, if only because it reminds us so much of all the films we loved from our childhood. We heap praise all over the place, repeated forgive it its sins and excesses, and try to nitpick anachronisms.

We compare it to other J J Abrams films, Steven Spielberg films, The Explorers, The Goonies, Aliens, and Alf.

Bonus: we manage to keep it clean.

We’re watching the Blu-ray. Start right after the Paramount logo on the countdown.

  1. I haven’t listened to this yet because I’m lazy but I must say I love this film…..until the ending. It does the whole ’80s film’ thing so well until *SPOILERS* the murdering alien gets to leave so it can return with its mates to the buffet planet. Abrams tries to have his cake and eat it, he wants a Spielberg ending but seemed to have forgot that ET never munched on anyone. Making the alien a killer weakens the ending, in my opinion. Sure, it was really about kids reuniting with their dads but then, that just makes me wonder why the alien was there at all. The families reuniting while the murderer escapes is pretty laughable and softens the emotional impact for me. It doesn’t run the whole thing for me, though, I still thinks it’s a good, fun film. And the kids, Elle Fanning in particular are great.
