Please, Im begging you, stop talking about award show fashions2004.03.01 Entertainment | Movies | Satire | by Andrew Cole I'm not sure where or when it began to be a big deal, but can we please stop talking about the clothes that the celebrities wear to award shows? Sure, if Bjork is wearing a swan dress, that warrants attention; if Jennifer Lopez drapes herself in nothing but a scarf again, yes, I have no problem watching a report on that. But come on, quizzing every guest on the red carpet with "who are you wearing?" is revolting. What does it matter what designer's dress they chose? (No one really cares about the men's clothes and rarely pretends they do.) The outfits they wear aren't for sale to ordinary people, let alone affordable by them. They aren't the latest fashions poised to sweep the country in versions that are affordable, either. The only purpose they serve is to allow the celebrity to gush the name of the designer, thereby increasing both the celebrity's reputation and the designer's. What if non-clothing-designers began sponsoring the dresses worn to awards shows? Kind of like NASCAR. "Who am I wearing? Why, this dress was made for me by the fine folks at R J Reynolds, Joan."
