A Democrat’s fears about John Kerry

John Kerry attempts to shout. [Kerry campaign]

Sure Kerry is a waffler. He bends whichever way the political winds blow. But the thing that Democrats should fear about Kerry isn't waffling. Waffling only ensures that Kerry will do whatever opinion polls tell him to do. That's bad leadership—a third grader could lead the country that way—but it's not disastrous. No, the thing that Dems should fear about Kerry is his pomposity.

I am at times woefully disappointed in the choice of Kerry. He really is a hack. He's exactly the sort of sterotypical senator that you'd expect to see in the movies being caught in a criminal coverup.

Months ago I watched a Bill Clinton give a speech at that big annual barbecue some Dem holds and he lit the place on fire. Kerry couldn't do that with an actual can of gasoline. It's no wonder that the main guys campaigning for him are his former Army buddies. The guy would have to save my life too before I'd work for his campaign.

So he's a boring, pompous, convictionless, career politician. He makes me long for Al Gore. God, what a rib-tickling, iron-nerved guy he was (in my memory). But at the same time, Kerry does seem like his spine would stiffen a bit as president. I don't think he'd lose any stuffing from his shirt or grow a sense of humor, but he does seem like the kind of guy who would make honest, steady attempts at reform.

My real fear is that John Kerry would become a caretaker president, unwilling—perhaps even emotionally unable—to take risks that would give America a real change of course.

And, at this point, this country needs a change of course.
