Who’s the most narcissistic pundit?

2004.07.28 — Culture | Personalities | by BB Rodriguez

Narcissus

The narcissistic pundit. [source]

In getting some citations for another article, I happened to visit Sean Hannity's website, and it prompted me to marvel aloud: damn this guy likes pictures of himself. His smirking face is plastered all over the front page in various snarky poses like he was a fashion model (if fashion models had websites, which they don't... as far as I know. I certainly don't go exploring the Internet for pictures of them).

You are a pathetic, lying sack of crap, and Laetitia Casta knows it. —Ed.

On a hunch, I checked Rush Limbaugh's website. Wow. Same deal. So I began to wonder: who is the Trumpiest of them all?

Then I remembered: there really aren't any pundits I like.

I tried to think of all the pundits of any importance, especially ones I hate. But to be fair, I wanted to include those I like. Who know? Maybe my favorite is so narcissistic it would change my mind. Then I remembered: there really aren't any pundits I like.

Note: Position on the page does not indicate political orientation (there are very few avowed lefties in radio or TV). Websites change frequently, so pic numbers are based on the screen captures cached here. Sequential rank and hubris ratings are subjective, but based only on the websites as described, not on the quality or politics of the radio or television shows hosted by the pundits. Please: no wagering.

Oliver North

The colonel speaks out. [source]

13. Oliver North

0 pics of himself. In fact, I wasn't sure this was really his site, or if maybe it was just a site for him by his book publisher. There's a link to his show's page on the Fox News site (where there is 1 pic of him), but that's it.

Hubris rating: 0 out of 10.

Dennis Miller

Less punditry, more lame comedy. [source]

12. Dennis Miller

Just 1 pic of himself. This is not really a pundit site. It's just a general site for Miller. Perhaps he doesn't want to commit to the show he has now on CNBC, which is a travesty of comedy, punditry, and animal husbandry.

Hubris rating: 1 out of 10.

Al Franken

Self-effacing but rather excitable. [source]

11. Al Franken

Just 1 pic of himself, including individual book covers. His site is basically just about his books; Al has another site about his show, the Al Franken Show (formerly The O'Franken Factor), which also just has 1 photo and is basically just a show blog (shlog?). His show is pretty good, mainly because he makes a real effort to be fair, despite his avowed liberal bias.

Hubris rating: 2 out of 10.

Laura Ingraham

Laura Ingraham. [source]

10. Laura Ingraham

Just 1 pic of herself. Gallery with a couple of photos. She's a right winger and not among the most popular. I've never listened to her radio show, so my rating is unbiased by how much I might disagree with her. Nudges out Al in the ranking for wearing T-shirts.

Hubris rating: 2 out of 10.

Michael Moore

Doesn't claim to be fair or balanced. [source]

9. Michael Moore

2 pics of himself, including individual book covers. Not really a pundit site, his site is more like those temporary sites for promoting movies. Which, of course, it does, since Moore produces awful, cloying documentaries. Nudges out Al and Laura for wearing T-shirts and baseball caps.

Hubris rating: 2 out of 10.

Michael Medved

Want to see his baby pictures? He thinks you do. [source]

8. Michael Medved

Just 1 pic of himself. Bio (which, oddly, mentions how he dodged the Vietnam draft) with several photos. He's a conservative who got famous as a (pretty good) movie critic. I've never listened to his show, but that caricature perfectly captures his milquetoast smile.

Hubris rating: 3 out of 10.

G Gordon Liddy

I'm watching you punks. [source]

7. G Gordon Liddy

3 pics of himself. Two galleries (the man and the show) with lots of pictures. That pic of him peeking up over the top of banner is fucking creepy. Reminder for the youngsters: Liddy engineered the Watergate break-in that destroyed a president.

Hubris rating: 4 out of 10.

Alan Colmes

Alan Colmes. [source]

6. Alan Colmes

6 pics of himself, counting individual book covers. Gallery with lots of photos, mostly with guests. Colmes is the moderate half of Hannity & Colmes. Even this moderate level of self-love is odd in a man who looks like an alien being who is wearing a rubber mask. Nudges out Liddy in the ranking for sheer gall.

Hubris rating: 4 out of 10.

Ann Coulter

Pipe down or she'll call you a traitor. [source]

5. Ann Coulter

6 pics of herself, including individual book covers. Gallery with lots of photos, mostly alone. She's easily one of the craziest of the wild-eyed right wing, so maybe she just couldn't find anyone who wanted to be seen with her. This would rank her higher, but let's face it—she's a pretty hot babe.

Hubris rating: 5 out of 10.

Bill O'Reilly

Even visitors to his site think he's offensive. [source]

4. Bill O'Reilly

Just 3 pics of himself, counting individual book covers. Gallery with lots of photos, with more available for premium site membership: $4.95 per month. That takes guts.

Renowned for being a jackass himself, O'Reilly actually had a poll in which he asked who was the "most annoying pundit." As you can see, O'Reilly himself came in somewhere in the middle of his own poll. This would lower his hubris rating except for one thing. Michael Moore was at the top of the poll, and Al Franken (who O'Reilly calls by his old SNL character's name "Stuart Smalley") was at the bottom. O'Reilly then held a run-off between Moore and Franken, as if they had both scored highly.

Hubris rating: 6 out of 10.

Sean Hannity

Sean Hannity, Republican tool. [source]

3. Sean Hannity

8 pics of himself, counting individual book covers. Gallery with several photos. Hannity has three self-portraits in his banner alone. Next on the agenda: erecting a 30-foot bronze statue of himself in the Fox parking lot.

Hannity is less of a jackass than O'Reilly (at least on his TV show), but that's not saying much. Just voted sexiest newscaster by Playgirl, so he gets a little slack for being big-headed about his looks.

Hubris rating: 7 out of 10.

Rush Limbaugh

Still big. Still an idiot. [source]

2. Rush Limbaugh

7 or 8 pics of himself, counting individual book covers. Limbaugh's site is kind of a Where's Waldo? game. There are pictures of him tucked into corners and blended into the backgrounds. Rush is famous for playing fast and loose with the facts on his show (and got attacked by Franken in print for it), but he's not much worse than Hannity or O'Reilly and measurably saner than Coulter. Plus he mildly funny (altho not nearly as funny as Franken).

Hubris rating: 9 out of 10.

Michael Savage

Far right and proud of it. [source]

1. Michael Savage

10 pics of himself, counting individual book covers, but not counting stacks of books and the like. Head of Paul Revere Society, membership in which costs $40 per year. Also has, by far, the longest home page of the group. Savage is not even one of the best-known of the radio talkers; I've never heard his show. My guess is that you have to joing the PRS to get the really crazy info. Or maybe there are nude photos of him.

Hubris rating: 10 out of 10.

Just for fun, I thought I would compare the pundits to Oprah and Donald Trump.

Donald Trump

1 pic of himself. No gallery. Incredibly, the man famous for loving himself so much that he puts his name on every building he owns is remarkably restrained in his web presence. Apparently The Donald loves his name more than his face. Everything is named "Trump" except his beauty pageants. Of course the title of "Miss Trump" could be objectionable to Mrs. Trump or to Trumpolicious trophy daughter Ivanka.

Note: I bet the domain "trumponline.com" gets a lot of traffic from people looking for trampolines.

Hubris rating: 3(!)

Oprah Winfrey

The queen of daytime talk has 4 pics of herself, including magazine covers. No gallery, apparently. This would lower her hubris rating, but, hey, she has a magazine all about herself.

Hubris rating: 4.
