Can’t W fire anyone? How incompetent do you have to be?2005.09.10 Government | George W Bush | Hurricane Katrina | by Derek Jensen
Karl Rove probably thinks he's gotten off the hook now. Nobody is asking his boss why he hasn't been fired anymore. Now they're asking why FEMA head Michael Brown hasn't been fired. That's no surprise, really. After all, Rove's disgraceful scandal of incompetence is what took the heat off Donald Rumsfeld's disgraceful scandal of incompetence And Bremer begat Rumsfeld. And Tenet begat Bremer. And Rice begat Tenet. And Bush begat Rice. And the Supreme Court begat Bush. Phew. Brown has been shown to be incompetent at managing FEMA, the agency in charge of fixing big problems. So who fixes FEMA when it becomes a big problem? FEMAEMA? James Lee Witt, the man Clinton put in charge of FEMA and who built it into a paragon of decisive action*, worried publicly that FEMA was being castrated 2004. But William Saleton was asking if FEMA was being screwed up way back in 2002. Now we know the answer.
Brown has now been "recalled to Washington," whatever that means. He won't be managing the Hurricane Katrina cleanup, but he will still be managing FEMA. What the hell does it take to actually get fired from the Bush administration? Murder? Oh, yeah. All you have to do is disagree with him or tell the truth in public. Maybe next Bush will announce that you are either with him, or you are with the hurricane. If it comes to that, I'll take the hurricane. UPDATE: Brown resigned, apparently without being asked by the president, since Junior seemed to be the last to know. DOUBLE-DOG UPDATE: He's been hired back! TRIPLE LINDY UPDATE: Pre-Katrina video suggests he knew what needed to be done, he was just incompetant at doing it and so was the rest of the Bush administration.
Notes * Seriously. Even George Wubbleyoo Bush said so. You know, as governor, one of the things you have to deal with is catastrophe. I can remember the fires that swept Parker County, Texas. I remember the floods that swept our state. I remember going down to Del Rio, Texas. I have to pay the administration a compliment. James Lee Witt of FEMA has done a really good job of working with governors during times of crisis.
