I just unsubscribed from MoveOn.org. Occasionally, I've become annoyed with their e-mails and petitions, because far too many of them are about politics, not policy. Ideology, instead of ideas. But today's was a petition or some such, asking people to raise their voice in support of holding independent investigations into the cluster fuck that is the federal relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
I don't know what's more depressing: the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people, the current government's inability to grasp the gravity of the situation in a timely manner and act, or the amount of time the "liberal" opposition's leadership has been spending trying to find someone to blame in the media.
It disgusts me that liberals everywhere are jumping in with people like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi who, instead of using the significant resources they could bring to bear towards actually helping people who are suffering through the aftermath of this disaster, are using it as a tool in their rabid quest to unseat the president.

They have no ideas or concerns at all, except to bash conservatives in power. Good luck, because I have a news flash for Democrats: Republicans are better at this game than you are.
Ask yourself, what would a real Democrat or a real liberal do? What would LBJ, or JFK, or even Harry Truman be doing right now? You think they would be tripping over themselves to get to the microphone to call for investigations in Congress? I doubt it. I think it's more likely they would be advancing real ideas about how to get help to those who are suffering.

Ironically, the Democrats are squandering the very opportunity they think they have right now. If, instead of bashing the Republicans, they were to propose, manage and successfully implement some plans to help the people in the gulf—with or without federal help—maybe people outside of NYC and California would see that maybe liberals actually can organize and accomplish something positive.

Take Cindy Sheehan for an example. She had been very focused on a cause important to her, but she's moved all the folks in her Camp Casey to Louisiana to join with the Veterans for Peace effort headquartered outside of New Orleans to collect donated supplies and distribute them directly and immediately to those who need them. She's not stopping every five minutes to conduct a press conference to pat herself on the back, or blame someone for their failures. She's just acting.
Democrats, you have now proved yourself to be as out of touch with Americans and their problems as even the most aristocratic Republicans.
Congratulations.
