Who is an “enemy combatant”? Part 2: You definitely are!2005.12.22 Government | Law | Satire | by BB Rodriguez
So.... skeptical about that article on civil rights from a month ago? Hmmm. Who has the last laugh now? I think it is I, BB Rodriguez. Not only is George W Bush incarcerating people without due process, hiding prisoners in secret prisons outside the United States, and torturing them, he's also secretly and illegally investigating ordinary people who are politically active against his policies—even policies that have nothing to do with national security. The only open question left is this: has the president authorized an illegal investigation of a political activist who was then incarcerated without due process in a secret overseas prison where he or she was tortured? And, if so, why didn't they choose Christopher Hitchens? Seriously. That guy needs to dry out. So what kind of people is the Bush administration keeping an official eye on? Well, pretty much everybody, but especially the usual people who try to overthrow governments: vegans, environmentalists, and poverty relief groups.
Who among us can forget the 1987 overthrow of the Guatemalan government by tree-huggers? It touched off the bloodiest wetland restoration in history. And remember how the Greenpeace navy invaded Norway back in the 70s and elected a blue whale as prime minister? And don't get me started about the terror tactics of the barrio-storming Meals on Wheels people. Prior to the recent revelations that Bush okayed warrantless wiretaps that seriously-no-joke-definitely needed a warrant, Bush claimed that all spying on Americans had judged-approved warrants. This combination of taking liberties with the Constitution and lying about it, inventing an unnecessary war and pretending it was necessary, and making short-sighted changes to policies on prisoner treatment that are immoral and endanger our own troops, reveals George W Bush to be an appalling failure as a president. And the shit is hitting the fan again. What angers me most about this is Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld really have so very little respect for the rule of law that they have to be constantly watched and blocked from just arresting anyone they regard as an enemy. Literally, they have no qualms about having ordinary protesters arrested on trumped-up charges and spying on their activities... AND they have no qualms about labeling people "enemy combatants" and locking them up without due process... AND they have no qualms about hiding prisoners in secret prisons... AND they have no qualms about torturing "suspected terrorists" who turn out to be innocent. How long before they actually arrest some animal rights activist and ship him to a secret CIA torture camp in Thailand? GWB will go down in history as a miserable leader, a delusional commander-in-chief, and a criminal subverter of the basic human and civil rights that all Americans should treasure. The question is: how did he fool half the country for so long? And how fast can we get rid of him? Constitutionally, of course. UPDATE: King George really does want to be a dictator! He thinks that military force and domestic espionage are the same thing, and he explicitly asked for power to conduct military operations inside the United States. That's a bold son of a bitch. MORE UPDATES: Bushies put the author of Bush's Brain on the No Fly List. Does "James Moore" sound like "Osama bin Laden" to you? Your fascism dollars in action.
