Legacy of disgrace

Bush gets Libby off, destroys last vestiges of honor

2007.07.02 — Government | Politics | Law | by BB Rodriguez

George W Bush

W's page in the Worst US Presidents coloring book [source]

George W Bush has always styled himself "the decider." He decides if Saddam is dangerous. He decides if Rice will talk to Congress. He decides if Rumsfeld is incompetent. He decides if Gonzales is a hack. He decides if it's okay to spy on Americans, imprison people without charges, and torture suspects. And now he decides if Scooter Libby should serve more of his sentence for obstructing justice than Paris Hilton served for driving on a suspended license.

Again and again, W has proven that he has the worst possible instincts for running a country that a man could have. He puts cronies and hacks in charge of policy. He uses politics and religion as litmus tests. He shows contempt for Congress, the news media, the American people, and the US Constitution. He is morally corrupt and ethically bankrupt.

Torture is immoral. Always. It is wrong and ineffective. And the people who condone it are evil. Many members of the Bush administration have actively condoned and covered up torture. Kidnapping people and sending them to secret prisons, imprisoning hundreds in Gitmo, imprisoning anyone without charges or a lawyer is immoral. It's un-Christian. And it's un-American.

He shows contempt for Congress... and the US Constitution. He is morally corrupt and ethically bankrupt.

Using terror alerts for political gain is unethical. Commuting the sentence of Scooter Libby is unethical. There is no way to justify throwing out a high court sentence because the guy is your crony. Attacking Joe Wilson because he proved that your case for war was unfounded is unethical.

Bush is not even good at being a bad president. He doesn't even pretend to give a shit about public perception or his legacy as a leader. He isn't even good at shifting blame. All he does is wave a flag, invoke the name of God and 9/11, and stumble awkwardly thru the occasional public address. He doesn't even have the decency to appear embarrassed by his incompetence.

It may be that the freeing of Scooter Libby will be the last straw that breaks all support in Congress

It is mind-boggling that the American people re-elected such a gross incompetent. It's worse still that Congress can't even figure out how to stop him—or even to remove his contemptible attorney general. It may be that the freeing of Scooter Libby will be the last straw that breaks all support in Congress, and Republicans begin actively working against him to save their own legacies.

It may be the only hope for American dignity that the selfish self-respect of Republican Congressional leaders is what finally forces Bush and Cheney to resign, reform, or at least install competent people in positions of power.

Regardless, the passing of Bush 2 will be like the passing of any other incompetent tyrant. The next leader, however like him, will condemn him to the ash heap of history. His portraits will be defaced, his statues toppled, his likeness painted out of photographs. But he will never be completely forgotten. After all, Nero is remembered, perhaps not in detail, but in his legacy: a legacy of disgrace.
